Project Aim

To develop water infrastructure to transfer water from existing Hydro Tasmania lakes via pipelines to the irrigation areas in the Forth agricultural area.

Project Status

A 2007 pre-feasibility report was completed by DPIPWE and Cradle Mountain Water on potential irrigation demand in the Mersey-Forth areas and an examination of potential engineering, economic  and environmental issues involved with delivering water to these areas.

The report identified four potential schemes, three of which are recommended for further investigation:
  • Forthside-Don scheme
  • Kindred-North Motton scheme
  • Sheffield-Barrington scheme
  • Mole Creek-Caveside scheme (considered uneconomic)
A public meeting was held oin Ulverstone on 22 July 2009 to discuss the pre-feasibility options and a consultative group of local landowners elected to work with the TIDB on the most efficient, cost effective method of delivery of water to the region.
  • Expressions of interest, land capabilty and a socio-economic report on the Kindred-North Motton scheme have been completed
  • High-level engineering has presented an option for water delivery and this will culminate in a Preferred Option being provided to the Board of the TIDB in August 2010.

Next Stage

  • Flora and fauna surveys of the immediate pipeline route
  • Cultural heritage studies of the immediate pipeline route
  • Expressions of interest for the Forthside-Don region
