Project Aim
The proposed Whitemore Irrigation Scheme will bring 5,500ML of water over a 150-day irrigation season from the Poatina tailrace to farmland stretching from the foot of the Great Western Tiers to just north of Carrick. It requires construction of 40km of pipelines.
This scheme's 12,000ha irrigable area is a mix of large and small farms, comprising mainly class 3,4 or 5 agricultural land. Existing enterprises produce poppies, potatoes, vegetables, and pasture for dairy and stock fattening amongst others.
The Whitemore scheme complements the Meander dam pipelines to one side and the Cressy-Longford scheme to the other side. It 'fills in the gap' to create an arc of irrigation stretching from west of Deloraine to beyond Cressy.
