Project Aim

To deliver 8,700ML of water per year into the Clyde Valley at high reliability (>95%) and at the lowest practical operating cost. The proposed scheme will provide alternative sources of reliable water for the Clyde valley by using three separate water sources: River Clyde, Shannon River and Great Lake. In addition, the scheme has excess capacity to deliver an additional 7,700ML of water per year, although this would be at a higher cost.

Project Status

The business case has received approval from the Tasmanian Government. The business case was developed by the TIDB and input from irrigators has delivered a number of scheme design improvements that have increased the economic benefit of the scheme to the region.  A pipeline has been added to the original TIDB preferred option to service a practically irrigable area of up to 700ha within 1,800 ha region of non-riparian land immediately below Bothwell along an 11km length of Hollow Tree Road.

The project is now in the Planning and Approvals phase. Geotechnical, cultural heritage, flora and fauna, and aerial surveys  of dam sites and pipeline routes have been completed.  The detailed site investigations will provide the information required to progress final designs and to accompany applications for statutory approvals including flora and fauna and cultural heritage permits and construction permits for dams. Tendering will commence for the final design of the scheme once irrigators have committed to water uptake to the threshold level.

Next Stage

The TIDB will need to commence seeking commitments from irrigators to purchase water. Confirmation by irrigators of requirements  for water entitlement from the SCIS will enable the scheme design to be finalised and formal contractual close achieved. A Water Supply Agreement with Hydro Tasmania will also be required.  The timeframe is for the Shannon Clyde scheme to deliver water in the 2012-13 irrigation season.
